2015 Ford Mustang 50Y Edition - Going, Going, Almost Gone

Do you find yourself gravitating towards purchasing a 2015 Mustang but you don't want to own one because someone in your geographical area is likely to have an exact copy? Or are you the type of person who can't decide which Mustang options to select and just want to simplify the Mustang buying experience? Or perhaps you're the type of person that wants a Mustang with all the optional goodies standard? The good news is Ford is there to lend a helping hand. The bad news is your time is running out. The answer to all these questions is the 2015 Ford Mustang 50Y (edition).

The Mustang 50Y edition is a limited production run of only 1,964 Mustangs to commemorate the Mustang's 50th birthday. Technically the Mustang first arrived in the early part of the 1964 calendar year and was released as a 1964 1/2 model, so Ford crafting a 50th anniversary edition car from the outgoing 2014 Mustang would have been more correct. However all 1964 1/2 Mustangs had 1965 model year VIN numbers allowing Ford to get away with having a special edition 2015 Mustang model to celebrate 50 years of Mustang fun.

All Mustang 50Y editions are Mustang GT coupes with the Premium package with the exception of car number 1 of 1,964 which is a (Wimbledon White) GT convertible with the Premium package. This car was never available for sale, it was offered last Fall in a charity raffle. So if you wanted a 50Y 2015mustang50y 4convertible you have unfortunately missed the boat. Same is true with car number 1,964 (a Wimbledon White Coupe), the last of the production run, was auctioned last Fall with the winning bid being $170,000.

Even though all Mustang 50Y editions were produced at the beginning of the 2015 model year (almost a year ago) there are still a good number of them for sale at Ford dealerships. Most Ford dealers tacked on hefty price premiums on the 50Y coupe's $46,170 (MSRP) price. Some dealers had markups as high as $20,000 over MSRP. The good news is that the model year only has 3 more months left before the new 2016 Models models begin arriving. This means that dealers left with 50Y editions have begun to lower their markups. And the time is fast approaching when these dealers will be forced to remove the markups in order to move them off their lots or showroom floors. The end result is for those who want a loaded with options and super rare almost one of a kind Mustang for around MSRP now is the time to get one.

The 50Y's standard items are too numerous to even mention - everything from SYNC with MyFord Touch to Line Lock which allows easy smokey tire burnouts is standard.  Even a dual zone electronic climate control system and the Mustang's high-end 12 speaker sound system are standard. The only decisions as a buyer you have to make are whether to choose Wimbledon White or Kona Blue as the exterior color and whether you want the 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission. 2015mustang50y 5Wimbledon White has historical significance since the first 1964 1/2 Mustang produced was painted in this eye catching white hue. Kona Blue on the other hand is a very attractive color however it's a late-model Mustang color with no historical importance.

So what does the 50Y bring to the table? Of course there's the typical ornate 50Y exterior and interior trim you would expect (including a decorative "50 Years" (rear taillight panel) faux gas tank cap and (passenger-side) interior dash plague (which displays each car's production number). And there's nice little touches such as understated louvered rear side windows and 19-inch Y-shaped wheels (which are newer versions of the original 14-inch chrome Y-wheels that were optional on the first few model years of the Mustang). The most noticeable item on the 50Y is a large chrome pony with surrounding bright trim located on the front grille which looks just like the same grille treatment found on the original Mustang.

I'll cut to the chase, the best thing about the 50Y is that it's standard with the Mustang GT's optional Performance Package which includes a strut tower brace, better suspension tuning, a larger capacity radiator, larger rear anti-sway bar, heavy duty front springs, Brembo six-piston front brake calipers with oversized rotors, 19-inch super sticky Pirelli P-Zero Y-speed-rated performance summer tires (P255/40s front and P275/40s rear), etc. The 2015mustang50y 66-speed manual transmission is mandatory with the Performance Package equipped Mustang GT however there's an exception with the 50Y edition, it's available with the 6-speed automatic. So for those who want a Mustang with the Performance Package and a 6-speed automatic transmission, the 50Y is their only chance. The 6-speed automatic equipped 50Y has a 3.55 rear axle ratio while the 6-speed manual equipped has a slightly more aggressive 3.73 rear axle ratio.

And it goes without saying the 50Y since it's based on the GT Premium has standard the GT's hot 435 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque 5.0 liter DOHC V8. There's really nothing you can't like about this motor, it produces lots of horsepower and torque and no matter what gear you're in, the massive amount of power is there. And for 2015, power has been bumped up 15 horsepower and 10 lb-ft of torque so life is indeed good especially when you realize 0-60 mph arrives in a quick 4.4 seconds and the quarter-mile occurs in just 12.8 seconds.

The interior is a black/cashmere color combination. The leather seats are mostly cashmere. The dash is decorated with stylish engine turned aluminum trim. And the front bucket seats have "50 Years" 2015mustang50y 3callouts. And every Mustang interior option is available. Even the harshest critics will be pleased with this interior.

Perhaps even after reading all of this you want some of the 50Y goodies on a 2015 Mustang but want to pay considerable less than the 50Y MSRP. Ford has the answer for your dilemma - it's called the "50th Anniversary Package" which is priced at $1,595 and includes the 19-inch Y-wheels, P255/40R19 W-speed-rated performance tires, 50th anniversary floor mats, front bucket seats with "50 Years" callouts, and a front grille chrome pony with surrounding chrome trim. This package is only available on the 2015 Mustang GT Premium and 2015 Mustang EcoBoost (2.3 liter turbo 4-cylinder) Premium.

If you happen to be one of the lucky few to purchase a 2015 Mustang 50Y, not only will you have one of the rarest Mustangs ever produced but you'll be driving a historic placeholder that will forever mark 50 years of existence (without interruption) for one of the greatest performance cars ever produced. And for those who lack any sentimentality, the 50Y is one of the fastest and best handling 2+2 sports coupe you can buy in the world. Get the picture?
